How to Stay Safe When Traveling

Do Your Research

Before taking a trip, do some research into the region you plan to visit. Specifically look for information about the city you plan to travel to. Some areas within a country might be totally safe while others are highly dangerous. Also consider the type of crimes that are common. Is it petty theft or more violent crime. One of the best resources for a high level overview of a country is the CIA World Factbook. It provides short summaries of each country and a recommendation of whether US Citizens should travel there.

Don’t Be a Target

Avoid wearing overly expensive or flashy clothing and jewelry in risky areas. This might seem like common sense, but unfortunately some travelers get too wrapped up in the excitement of a new place that they don’t consider potential dangers. While the fashion districts of Milan might be the perfect place to wear high end clothing, this should be avoided in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Likewise when taking your honeymoon to the bahamas, where there is still significant poverty, it’s wise to leave behind expensive jewelry. Wear the wedding rings at the ceremony and surrounding festivities, but leave them safely behind if possible. Not only can these items make you and your loved ones a target, they can also be stolen out of luggage or room.

Be Observant

Pay attention to the people around you and don’t put yourself in a dangerous situation. Do not go out alone at night in urban areas. This is a good rule to follow even in relatively safe areas. Keep an eye on those around you, make sure people aren’t attempting to follow you. Don’t be overly trusting of locals or other tourists and put yourself in potentially dangerous situations. Unfortunately many people fall victim to fellow tourists who pray upon them.

Keep Loved Ones Informed

Make sure people know where you are and where you plan to be in the coming hours or days. If something does happen, the sooner someone notices a problem and takes action, the better.
